SSM Business Registration in Kuala Lumpur
Choose the right business type, prepare your EzBiz details and avoid preventable name or information errors.
A sole proprietorship or partnership can be the simplest way to formalise a small business in Kuala Lumpur. It also leaves the owner or partners personally responsible under Malaysian rules. SSAM helps you understand that trade-off before you register.
EzBiz preparation: owner-controlled steps, with the route and details checked first.
SSAM GROUP COMPANY REGISTRY SERVICES
Clear scope, responsive support and one team across company registration, secretarial and business compliance work.
A Fast Registration Can Still Be the Wrong Structure
The form is short. The decision is not. Owners often discover unlimited personal liability, partner disputes or banking and tender limitations only after the business starts growing.
Registration, licences, tax and renewal are separate jobs. Keep the record and the next action together so one filing does not hide the others.
The three checks to make before you use EzBiz
- Register only after checking whether the entity fits the risk and growth plan.
- Use a trade name or activity description that is accurate and ready for the current SSM process.
- Do not assume SSM registration includes every required business licence.
What SSAM Helps You Prepare
The work starts with the owner, the activity and the structure. EzBiz account verification and other owner-controlled steps remain with the owner or partners.
Entity fit
Compare sole proprietorship, partnership, LLP and Sdn Bhd.
Eligibility
Confirm Malaysian-citizen or permanent-resident ownership and age requirements.
Name and activity review

A Practical Starting Point for Small Kuala Lumpur Businesses

Online sellers and home businesses
Prepare the activity, address and name details before filing.

Entity fit before form filling
The advice starts with the owner, activity and risk, not the assumption that the cheapest structure is always right.
Current SSM route explained
SSAM is separate from SSM. SSM remains the registering authority and decides the application under its current process.
Owner-controlled steps made clear
You know which EzBiz registration, verification and identity steps must be completed by the owner or partners.
A next-step checklist
Plan tax, licences, banking, renewal and a future move to LLP or Sdn Bhd when the risk profile changes.
When to reassess the business structure
- Liability, contracts or financing become material.
- You plan to hire, add owners or bring in investors.
- The business needs continuity beyond the current owner or partners.
- The activity needs licences, tenders or banking support better suited to a company.
Four Steps From Decision to Registered Business
EzBiz remains an owner-led process. SSAM helps you prepare the route and details, then plan the follow-up obligations that sit outside registration.
STEP 01
Compare the structures
Check ownership, liability and likely growth.
STEP 02
Prepare the name and details
Confirm owners, partners, address, branches and activity.
STEP 03
Complete the EzBiz steps
Follow the current account, verification and application process.
STEP 04
Plan renewal and follow-up
Store the registration and track tax, licence and renewal obligations.
Separate SSM Fees From Professional Help
Official SSM fees currently include the amounts below. They are statutory charges, not SSAM service fees, and are subject to SSM’s current schedule.
- Personal-name business: RM30 per year.
- Trade-name business or partnership: RM60 per year.
- Each branch: RM5 per year.
SSAM professional help is separate from SSM charges. Scope and fee are confirmed after the owner’s route, activity and required preparation are understood.
The Dates Owners Need to Track
Registration, licences, tax and renewal are separate jobs. Keep the record and the next action together so one filing does not hide the others.
| Event | Action |
|---|---|
| Before or shortly after trading starts | Complete registration within the statutory period. SSM registration does not replace a business licence. |
| After a complete EzBiz submission | SSM lists a client charter of within one working day after an application is received. This is a published service target, not an approval guarantee. |
| Registration expiry | Renew before expiry where possible. Current SSM guidance allows renewal before expiry and up to 12 months after expiry, subject to current rules and business status. |
| Chosen renewal period | Renew for a period of one to five years. Check the current options and status with SSM. |
| Change to address, activity, branches or partners | Update SSM through the current process. Some changes have a statutory notification period. |
| Business stops | File termination rather than letting the record drift. |
| Growth changes the risk profile | Reassess LLP or Sdn Bhd before contracts, hiring, financing or continuity needs outgrow the enterprise. |
Check SSM’s current EzBiz fee table and business-renewal guidance before acting.

SSM Business Registration in Kuala Lumpur FAQs
The answers below separate SSM registration from the decisions and obligations that sit around it. Check the linked SSM guidance for the current position.
A sole proprietor or every partner must be a Malaysian citizen or permanent resident and at least 18 years old. EzBiz business registration is ordinarily for Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan. Sabah and Sarawak have different registration routes, so confirm the current process with SSM.
One person owns a sole proprietorship. A conventional partnership has two or more partners, subject to the current legal limit, and the partners share responsibility. Neither structure creates the same separation from personal liability as a company.
SSM currently lists RM30 per year for a sole proprietorship using a personal name, RM60 per year for a sole proprietorship or partnership using a trade name, and RM5 per year for each branch. These are SSM-listed fees and are subject to SSM’s current schedule. Check SSM’s current EzBiz fees
Not through the ordinary EzBiz business-registration route, which requires the owner or partners to be Malaysian citizens or permanent residents. A different structure or route may apply to other cases, depending on the facts and activity. Confirm the current position before acting.
Yes. A sole proprietorship is not separate from the owner, and conventional partnership liabilities can affect the partners personally. Consider the level of risk, contracts and financing before choosing the structure.
No. A sole proprietor may use the exact personal name on the identity card. A separate trade name requires approval. Under SSM’s current new-business guideline, a personal name cannot be used for a partnership. Read SSM’s new-business guideline
Current SSM rules include owner-controlled registration and verification steps. Each owner or partner must register and verify as an EzBiz user where required, and first-time account setup may require identity verification at an SSM counter or kiosk. SSAM can help prepare the information and explain the route, but it does not replace those owner-controlled steps.
No. SSM registration records the business. Local council or sector licences and permits may still be required, and tax registration and tax compliance are separate matters. This service does not include recurring bookkeeping.
No. Registration is purchased for a chosen period of one to five years and must be renewed if the business continues. Current SSM guidance says renewal may be made before expiry and up to 12 months after expiry, subject to the current rules and the business status. Confirm a late renewal with SSM rather than relying on a general deadline. Check SSM’s current renewal guidance
Reassess when liability, contracts, hiring, financing, ownership or continuity needs outgrow the enterprise. The right point depends on the business, so compare the structure before committing to a change. Compare company incorporation in Kuala Lumpur
